| | Vice Squad - Last Rockers | ] | Hello....
I grew up in Tempe but I've been gone over a decade and only visited twice briefly since I left. Planning on visiting and bringing my family in Febrary and want to do awesome stuff while we're there. I would love some insight since I've been gone so long and a lot of the stuff that used to be there is not there now.
Punk dive bar? Good resturaunts? Bookstore with coffee that is not a chain? |

| Roommate Legal Advice in AZ |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|06:27 pm] |
Hello Everyone- I need some legal advice concerning a now ex-roommate. He and my other roommate broke up and he moved out. However, he hasn't come back to get his name off the lease or to pick up the rest of his stuff. I'm not sure where he's staying. He also owes me for last month's rent and utilities. Is there any free/cheap place that I can seek legal advice regarding what to do about him paying me back & what to do about his stuff he left? What are the small claims and abandonment procedures like in Arizona? Thanks. -Stephan |

Seeing how much my view of the MATEP has changed in a week gives me that feeling again that I should make it the subject of its own project. Where would I get that idea?
The new white boom is to catch yet another spill of hazardous material into the river. That's what yesterday's picture was about, too. The fact that almost every storm drain in Brookline drains to the Muddy makes it pretty vulnerable to this sort of thing. |

I was going to buy some cinnamon sticks at Stop and Shop today (for seasoning cider) and found that a container of five sticks was almost seven dollars. Is the cinnamon tree endangered? Does it come from a war zone? What gives? |

Hi friends,
I need some bones for a project. Any shape or size, tiny to huge. I'm also very interested in getting a ribcage of some kind. I'd take dirty bones but I'd prefer if they were meatless. The thought of soaking meaty bones in my bathtub makes me feel kind of ill. I've looked online but they're way too pricey. Any suggestions? A packing house perhaps? Know a farmer with bones scattered around the farm? Bone hunt! Thanks loves. If I procure enough bones I will post a picture of the finished product.

Tuesday - 10 November 2009 It's grey and a little hazy outside. The sun tried to put in an appearance as I was driving in to work, but the clouds don't seem to want to give way. Makes for a kind of "blah" morning.
Last night was a lazy evening in. We had dinner (Sloppy Joes!) and watched Monday Night Football. After the game, I spent a little time trying to wrangle the office into shape. I managed to actually make a bit of headway... while also realizing just how much detritus I've allowed to accumulate in the "To be shredded.." pile. Oh, well. One cool notable item: I was trying to figure out what to do with my TerrainLinX WWG tiles, when I remembered why I thought they were so cool: The whole thing breaks down into component pieces! I grabbed a shoebox and put the bits - both finished and in-progress pieces - in the box. Neat, discreet, and (best of all) out of the way! Little by little, the office is getting back to "good" shape.
Instant Replay: Football It was Monday night. There was football. Amen.

The Steelers went to Mile High Stadium to take on the Broncos and try to stay tied with the Cincinnati Bengals for the lead in the AFC North.
Can you say "Take it to the house," boys and girls? The Steelers could. And they did. Repeatedly.
Pittsburgh dominated the field on both sides of the ball, at least they did after the first half. Their offense was consistently able to move the chains. The "Steel Curtain" completely shut down the Bronco's run game.
Boilermaker Watch: Broncos' QB Kyle Orton had a "less than stellar" game: He threw for 221 yards (which is good), but with no TDs and three interceptions. It was not a good night for him - he never really went for deep routes and he missed picking up the blitzes on run plays. |

It looks as though the sun has finally won the battle.

| Interesting Class Today |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|08:16 pm] |
Man! This quarter's been speeding by! It's already November 9. Before I know it, it'll be time for Finals and I'll be on my way to winter quarter.
Actually, I have some things to do before the quarter ends. I have to register for next quarter's classes, start my application to Louisiana Tech, start my application for graduation from Fairhaven College and Western washington University, and get my GRE stuff in the mail to the vocational rehabilitation agency so they can do their necessary bit with the application for accommodations. I'm getting to the beginning of that scary transition time. I'm not afraid to go to Louisiana. Actually, i'm excited since it's something I've been working for for the past six years. I think it's just scary in that I'll be leaving the apartment I've lived in for the past five years or so. I'll be leaving my friends, and I'll have to figure out how I'm going to get my stuff from one side of the country to the other and get settled in over there. Yeah, there's a lot to do and I hope I don't chicken or flake out.
Today's Interpersonal conflict Resolution class was rough. We're working on role plays and actual conflict resolution methods now that we've properly analyzed conflict itself. we're doing a lot of role playing. Today, my professor decided to separate us into two groups representing two people in a conflict. One group represented Paul or Paula (depending on who the representative was at any given time), and the other group represented Joe or Josy. During the first phase of the activity, our teacher gave us these sheets of paper outlining our side of the conflict. I was in the Paul/Paula group. Basically, there was a misunderstanding/miscommunication and Joe/Josy was mad at us. During the first phase, we had to come up with negative adjectives for Joe/Josy and they had to do the same thing. She had us do this because it's generally how real conflict partners behave: they spend a while coming up with negative adjectives for the other person and talk smack about that person to others. Then, a representative from each group got up in front of the class and the two reps were supposed to shout these adjectives at each other (so we could see how destructive conflict escalates). Our adjectives for Joe/Josy were things like "selfish" or "jerk." We figured these would do for the role play. Their adjectives for our group were "pussy bitch" and "cunt." Those of us in the Paula/Paul group weren't impressed since the Joe/Josy group went way overboard. One girl in my group was not impressed at all because she felt they were being unprofessional. though my teacher didn't mention it outright, she felt that the Josy/Joe group played a power trip on her and abused the freedom she'd given them. She was irritated and I think a little hurt. I told her to go home, not do any work, and drink a glass of mead. Here's hoping she followed my advice. As for me, I was shocked that the other team would use words that were obviously degrading toward the female body and to women in general. Needless to say, it was an intense class today. I think the professor also felt a little shaken, too. Well, I'm taking my own advice and having a glass of mead.
What else is new? I'm doing really well on my diet and exercise plan. Actually, these last few days have been kind of weird on the eating end of things. On the exercise front and overall, I'm doing rather well. I'm down from 173 or so to 167 or so. It's really exciting. My goal is to be down to 165 or so by Christmas. I would love it if I got to 150 before Louisiana, but I don't think that will happen.
Well, I don't really have much else to say this evening. Sorry about that. I'm waiting for a friend to call so we can talk about a blindness seminar we're about to do tomorrow morning. After that, I'm going to bed since I wasn't feeling well last night and thus didn't sleep much. |

Monday - 09 November 2009 Welcome to a new week.
Yesterday saw a nice balance of laziness and productivity. After watching the early game - and watching the stats of the Ravens game - I started working in the office. It needs to be brought out of chaos and into order. In a big way. Next came some errand-running. Then we headed to dinner at SaraRules' parents' house.
Waking up this morning was a tedious process. Of course, not going to bed until nearly 0230 could have had something to do with that. Maybe.
Instant Replay: Football Yesterday was a day of across-the-board upsets, good and bad:
| Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals |
7 17
|
 |
 |
The Ravens (4-3) headed to Cincinnati to take on the 5 - 2Bengals... and maybe get a little closer to the top of the division.Quoth the Ravens: Never score.
I don't know what happened, but I'm willing to wager that it was one of two things:
- Someone suited up Owings Mills' JV team in Ravens' uniforms
- The Bengals were seriously out for blood
Whatever it was, the Ravens apparently didn't perform like the team that ended Denver's perfect season last week. And, according to janietrain, they couldn't buy a decent call, either. *sigh* It makes me glad that the game wasn't broadcast here.
Congratulations to janietrain and carefreespirit on both the win and sole possession of the lead in the AFC North. (And, yes, I'll be a Broncos fan tonight, when Pitt takes on Denver.) |
Coach Harbaugh, you just got chumped by the Bengals. Big time. How does that make you feel?

Yeah, I understand. I wouldn't want to talk about it, either.
| Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots |
17 27
|
 |
 |
The Dolphins, continuing their road series, headed to New England for a rematch against the Patriots!
Everyone in Foxboro apparently got the "One if by land, two if by sea" memo, because they went to town on the Dolphins. Where's Greenpeace when you need them...? |
.
| Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints |
| 20 - 30 |
 |
 |
I didn't get to see this one, but I was a little torn on it. On one hand, it's Carolina, my NFC team. On the other hand, it's the 7-0 Saints, led by former Boilermaker Drew Brees.
Loyalties... torn....
In the end, the Saints went marching in with a win and an 8-0 record. And I was just fine with that. |
Bye Week: Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns.
Stray Toasters
Quote of the Day A while back, I asked asdf_cat to write a recommendation for me on LinkedIn. He sent me the first draft last week:
Rob was a great hire. He has the skills to fit into which ever technical role we happened to throw at him at the time. However his true talent came forward whenever we needed to put a little pressure on an employee or make someone disappear. We still don't know what happened to some of the bodies. I thought that it was fine, as-is. He wound up changing it a little, to make it a bit more... palatable to the masses.
Namaste.

| Writer's Block: Just another manic Monday |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|03:51 pm] |
Perhaps if my weekends were more eventful, they would be more looked foreward to than they are. Lately, all days feel about the same whether I am at work or not. I usually look foreward to Mondays, but not the rest of the week until Friday. Those are the only two days that make things different. |

Sunday - 08 November 2009 This has been a good weekend.
Friday was SaraRules' birthday. After work, we went out for dinner. SaraRules' first choice was Red Iguana... unfortunately, there was an hour-plus-long wait to get in. No go, Flight. Her second choice was Sawadee, a Thai restaurant near downtown. I didn't know that it was even there; in my defense, I don't get to that part of the city very often. The food was very good (and very spicy!). After dinner, we met up with some of the usual suspects at Clitorati, including a special guest appearance from kecharagrl and chromezephyr.
Yesterday was a good day. It had a good mix of laziness and productivity. SaraRules went to her quilt club in the morning; I hung out with Chris and Perry. After we got home, we headed back out to run a few errands. Back home again. SaraRules took a nap, I assembled a bookcase. Later, we headed to Abravanel Hall to watch Utah Symphony perform a pair of works by Brahms:
- Concerto No. 1 for Piano in D Minor, op 15
- Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, op. 98
Pinchas Zuckerman conducted and Jonathan Biss was the guest pianist. The performance was good. I was particularly impressed/pleasantly surprised by Mr. Zuckerman's attire - he wore a slightly oversized black silk (I think) shirt with a pair of black slacks, rather than the traditional tuxedo that most conductors wear. Our seats were in the first tier, about five rows from the stage. This afforded an excellent view of the orchestra and of the conductor... as well as being close enough to hear Mr. Biss breathe. Seriously. When playing particularly intense passages, he breathed heavily. Very heavily. So heavily, in fact, that SaraRules said that it was like watching and listening to Darth Vader play.
This morning has been quiet. Breakfast. Football. (If only the Ravens could act like they remember how to play the game. *sigh* I've been spoiled by being able to watch them play for the past three weeks, but I think I'm glad that I can't watch this one.) This evening, we're heading over to the in-laws' for SaraRules' birthday dinner (with the family) and football.

Namaste.

| Search Engine Expert |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|11:37 am] |
Anyone here a search engine expert? That is, if you were given a huge database full of backend spider data, could you write a front-end search engine specific to the data?
For example, if I had a database of every car ever made, all of the parts, specifications, reviews, technical specs, prices, resale values ... all that stuff, could you write a kick-ass search engine front end that leveraged the fact that you knew the data set and could custom-make the front-end specific to that data?
If so, I may have a job for you.
I'm looking for someone already expert in this field, though. |
